How to use essential oils!

By The Petite Plantation - November 21, 2017

Whether you have just heard of essential oils, or have used them moderately over the years, I think there is always something new to learn about essential oils. When I first started using them, I would apply them directly on the skin but there are SO many ways to benefit from. So, here we are discussing all the different ways you can use essential oils for your well-being and in your home: inhaled, applied or ingested! So grab your favourite blend, and let's play!

Inhaling Essential Oils

This means inhaling the compounds through the nose and having them interact with the receptors in your nose. We can do this using a diffuser machine, which turns water and 3 to 6 drops of essential oil into vapor or mist into the air we inhale. They can also be worn on diffuser jewelry like these handcrafted wooden diffuser earrings on my Etsy Shop!

But essential oils can also inhaled by diluting them in witch hazel or water and misted throughout the air or on surfaces like your pillow for a restful night of sleep. This is particularly great for oils that cleanse and purify surfaces!

Lastly, applying a drop in your hands and holding them together under your nose while deep breathing is another great way to inhale those volatile compounds and to take a moment to yourself.

Applying Essential Oils

Essential Oils can be applied directly to the skin. Check your product guide to see if the oil you want to use can be applied neat (directly on the skin), or should be diluted. Popular places to apply are:
  • on the back of your neck
  • behind the ears
  • over your heart
  • the bottoms of your feet
  • across your abdomen (for stomach upset)
  • along your hairline (for occasional head tension)
You could also apply essential oils topically by diluting them in your bath waterin coconut oil to massage the skin, in a warm compress (achy feelings) or misted on the skin. There are SO many places to apply them on the skin depending on what your needs are in the moment.

Ingestion Essential Oils

Before I go any further, I have to prompt you to do your own research on ingesting essential oils because there is much debate whether they are safe or not to ingest. But I have read this article, and agree that certain oils from doTERRA are safe to ingest in moderation.

  • They could be added to a glass of water, in your tea, or in your favorite recipes like Peppermint Brownies or Cranberry Orange Muffins!
  • Essential Oils can also be placed into an empty supplement or veggies capsule to swallow and are already in the LifeLong Vitality Supplements.
  • Another way I use OnGuard when I am feeling under the weather it to place a drop under my tongue for an immunity boost!

Using Essential Oils Safely

There are a few things to keep in mind: if you are unsure, always dilute with coconut oil. Dilute essential oils with coconut oil or another oil when using on children or if you have sensitive skin! Avoid putting oils or touching your eyes when applying essential oils, and be sure to wash your hands so you don't rub them by accident! Oils should never be put into your ears or up your nose or any other very sensitive area...
