Homemade Bagel Recipe

My husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table about two weeks ago trying to think of ways to become even more self-sufficient. You see, it is all a part of our plan; to build a tiny cabin in the woods. We have a checklist of skills we are trying to check off so we can live a back to basics lifestyle.

One of the things that came up was to make items we normally buy at the grocery store. And since, we've already got homemade bread under our belt, it's obvious bagels were next on the list!

Now, I have made these delicious bagels once before without posting the recipe and my I've learned my lesson. My instagram and facbook accounts blew up demanding a recipe. Well, et voila!

This recipe is really easy to make and is so delicious, they'll be gone before you know it! The bagel dough gets divided into 8 equal parts, or 8 delicious bagels, then rolled into balls. To make them look like bagels, I poked the center with my index finger and swung it around like a doughy hula-hoop! Sounds hilarious, but is an accurate description!

The recipe is at the bottom of the page, but wait! The recipe below is for plain bagels, without any additional toppings, but don't fret! To add poppy seeds or sesame seeds, sprinkle them on top as soon as you pull them out of the boiling pot. This helps the seeds stick to the bagel!

Once they are boiled, they are ready to bake! Be prepared for the amazing scent of freshly baked goods, my friends.

Homemade Bagel Recipe

Ingredients:

1.5 cups of warm water
1 tablespoon yeast
1 tablespoon brown sugar
4 cups all purpose flour
2 tablespoons salt
10 cups of water

First, dissolve yeast and brown sugar in warm water for 10 minutes. Stir to combine, then add flour and salt. Knead on low speed in your stand mixer for 10 minutes. Remove dough from bowl, grease the bowl, return dough to the bowl and cover with a towel for 2 hours to rise.

After two hours, preheat your oven to 425F, divide dough into 8 portions and roll into balls. Shape in to bagels and place on a greased pan, cover and let rise for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 10 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of brown sugar to a rapid bowl and reduce to a slight boil.

Place bagels in boiling mixture for 2 minutes on each side, then place on greased pan. Bake for 25 minutes. Enjoy!
